Hints

You will soon become familiar with VocabOne. A few pointers thought to get you started:

  1. Card Box - The program uses a 'card box' system. It is set up initially so there are five compartments. To begin with all the words are in compartment one. When you get a word correct it moves on to the next compartment, if you get it wrong it moves back a compartment. Thus, the lower numbers compartments contain teh words which you are finding it difficult to remember, and which will need further work. The number in the bottom left of the screen indicates which compartment you are currently working through. As you work on the vocabulary, the cards should move up the compartments as you get better at remembering them. You can then work on the 'diffuclt words' which will be in the lower numbered compartments. The aim is to move all of the cards into compartment five (at which point the system resets and puts them all back in compartment one) - if you can do this, you know the words!

  2. Sound and Statistics - Initially the program is set to display statistics in the bottom right corner, and not to play sound. These settings can be changed on the view preferences menu.

  3. Reverse Testing - The system is set up to test Greek-English, i.e. helping you learn the meanings of Greek words. The software can be used to test to other way around, i.e. it gives the English and you type the Greek - just click 'flip cards' on the view menu. However, you will then need to type in Greek, which means you will need to learn the keyboard layout for the Greek font. Follow the link to Teknia Greek below to print out a diagram of the keyboard layout (the most important point is j produces a smooth breathing over the preceeding letter, J a rough breathing and V a sigma at the end of a word).

The VocabOne Program

The VocabOne program created by Simon Bünzli is very powerful. You can use it to edit and create lists of any words which need to be memorised. Each list of words is called a 'library' and these can be saved, exchanged with friends, or uploaded to the nt-greek.net website to be made available to everyone. The VocabOne help file explains how to use the program to create and manipulate you own data.

The TekniaGreek Font

The supplied zip file contains a copy of the TekniaGreek font, which has been used in the creation of the libraries. This font is freely available for use. More information about it, and its keyboard layout is available here.
